Big Mac attack from Motorola

Motorola has struck an exclusive distribution deal with Polaroid Computing. Starting in mid-November, Polaroid says it will sell eight models from Motorola's StarMax Power Mac clones via 100 dealers throughout Australia. The StarMax units range from the ADT 3160 166MHz box (RRP circa $3,900) to the AMT 4200 200MHz PowerPC, with an estimated RRP of $6,500.

Polaroid's Murray Cleworth says the arrival of the Motorola range marks a turning point in Mac clone sales. "In the past, the emphasis of individuals selling Mac clones has always been, 'This is just like an Apple, only cheaper.' What's happened now is that a major manufacturer like Motorola has come along and it means that these computers are going to be able to compete head-to-head with the Compaqs and HPs. It's no longer a question of comparing things to Apple, these units stand up on their own." Cleworth says the StarMax range comes with a five-year warranty (first year on-site) for parts and labour backed by Motorola. There is also free telephone support available for the first 90 days after purchase.
