While the concepts of data management have been with the IT community for as long as there's been data, often they only provide a data security to the password level, and not much else. But one software vendor is seeking to fill the gap in data management, by making security the priority in its management suite.
That product is OmniGuard from Axent Technologies, a suite of information security tools designed to enable organisations to centrally manage information security across a variety of client/server platforms. It provides enhanced data confidentiality, access control, user administration and intrusion detection, for stand-alone PCs and LANs, as well as Unix, Windows NT and Open VMS systems.
Policies are defined according to business goals and objectives, regardless of the underlying operating platform. Once these policies are in place the Enterprise Security Manager can monitor the security status of all computers or networks under its control.
Sydney-based Global Business Solutions (GBS) recently took on Australian distribution of the suite; managing director Barry Wong says his company is now looking for qualified resellers to take on the Axent range. "This is not a product that you just give to anyone, but in certain areas we will be setting up resellers."
Wong said due to the complexity of the suite and sensitivity of the security market, GBS will engage in some direct selling. However, he said the product has good margin, and would suit organisations with a strong understanding of the issues of implementation and management of security in a client/server enterprise. GBS has already appointed Computer Quest in the Canberra market, and will be appointing further interstate resellers.
