Acer adopts two-channel model

Acer has opted for a two-tiered channel with the appointment of Vantage Point Technology (formerly Clear) as its national distribution manager - complementing the regional distributors it has in each major State.

Negotiations have been going on between Acer and Vantage Point for several months, according to Acer sources. It was Vantage Point's decision to launch a complete PC assembly/build-and-test facility aimed at smaller resellers that swung the world's seventh largest PC supplier to appoint Vantage Point as its national distributor for Australia.

"We see the Technology Parc development as a key to helping resellers reduce costs," said Raymond Vardenaga, commercial channel man-ager for Acer Computer Australia. "The appointment of Vantage Point as national distributor extends our coverage and improves what we can provide for our resellers," he said.

Vardenaga said Acer has had to turn away resellers because it was unable to adequately service them.

"With Vantage Point handling national distribution, we will be able to look after these smaller resellers," he said.
