Deakin University has outsourced the management of its more than 3000 workstations with a consortium formed by Southmark Computer Systems and FBA Computer Technology Services.
Valued at $10 million over a three year period, it is believed to be the largest outsourcing deal signed by an Australian university. Deakin has six campuses spread along Victoria's southern coast. It has 50,000 students and 2500 staff.
Under the terms of the agreement, Deakin will sell its workstations to Macquarie Bank and lease them back for three years. Southmark and FBA will handle purchase, installation, maintenance and disposal of PC and Mac workstations.
An immediate payoff for the university will be upgrading all workstations to a minimum standard based on a 150MHz processor, 32Mb of RAM, 1.7Gb drive and CD-ROM drive.
