Quantum has a range of new desktop disk drives, including Quantum Bigfoot CY, a 5.25in product for consumer PC users; Quantum Fireball ST, a fast desktop drive (the first with an Ultra ATA interface, for commercial PC users); and Quantum Pioneer SG, a lower cost drive designed for entry-level commercial desktop computer users.
Quantum Bigfoot CY
The 2.1, 4.3 and 6.4Gb desktop drives are said to be "ideal for meeting escalating storage demands" such as increased software, image downloading from the Internet, and for any application requiring fast sequential performance such as multimedia.
The Bigfoot CY drives are Quantum's second-generation 5.25in form factor drives. They feature magneto-resistive (MR) heads, a PRML read channel, high internal data rates and a Fast ATA-2 interface.
Each platter stores 2.1Gb of data.
The drives are slim, with heights of .75 inches (1-disk 2.1Gb) and 1 inch (2-disk 4.3Gb and 3-disk 6.4Gb) and Quantum claims that they easily mount in virtually all mass storage bays without additional hardware. The Fast ATA-2 interface supports data transfer rates up to 16.6Mb per second.
The 3,600rpm Quantum Bigfoot CY drives use the same PRML read channel, MR heads, microprocessor and firmware technologies as the Quantum Fireball TM 3.5in drives. They have a maximum internal data rate of 92 megabits per second.
Additional features of the Quantum Bigfoot CY drives are a 128K buffer; an ID-less controller allowing for higher storage density and reliability; 224-bit double-burst error-correction on-the-fly for increased data integrity; and support for the S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) System.
Quantum Fireball ST
Quantum's Fireball ST 1.6, 2.1, 3.2, 4.3, and 6.4 drives are designed for use in power and corporate business PCs as well as entry-level workstations and servers. According to Quantum they are able to cope with the "latest computer technology and applications, including powerful microprocessors, advanced operating systems, real-time video, multimedia and Internet downloading".
The products' Ultra ATA interfaces allow burst data transfer rates of 33Mb/sec. Single platter storage capacity is 1.6Gb.
Additional features of the Fireball ST drive include fourth-generation MR heads, 10ms seek time, an internal data rate of 132Mb per second, tagged command queuing, 224-bit double-burst error-correction on-the-fly for increased data integrity and support for the S.M.A.R.T. System.
Quantum Pioneer SG
The Quantum Pioneer SG 1.0/2.1 products are 3.5in drives designed for corporate and SOHO buyers. The drives have a PRML read channel, a Fast ATA-2 interface and 4,500rpm speed.
They use a second-generation proximity recording head technology called Tri-NPAB (negative pressure air bearing).
This, combined with a PRML read channel, creates an internal data rate of 100Mb/sec and capacities of 1Gb for one platter and 2.1Gb for two.
The mechanical platform consists of a stamped steel base with integrated side rails to improve rigidity.
Additional features of the Pioneer SG drive include an ASIC interface that performs hardware error correction, 224-bit double-burst error-correction on-the-fly for increased data integrity and support for the S.M.A.R.T. system.
