ATI finds new formula

Allied Telesyn International says it can now offer a complete corporate networking solution with the release of its FORMULA series of infrastructure products.

Consisting of various ATM and Fast Ethernet devices, Allied says the FORMULA range offers a serious networking solution at a very competitive price.

"I suppose really it's the first time in Allied's history that we can start to provide all the components for a true end-to-end solution," said Melvyn Wray, Allied's European marketing director on a recent trip to Australia. "We've obviously started off at the desktop end, with transceivers, repeaters, switches etc. We're now moving up the food chain."

The FORMULA range is lead by the 5200 2.5Gbit/sec ATM switch, providing up to 16 OC-3 or 4 OC-12 ports and priced at $28,129.

It is accompanied by both workstation- and server-based adapter cards, priced at $1133 and $1668 respectively. Also in the range is the FORMULA 7200 10Mbit/sec switch with Fast Ethernet or ATM uplinks, and the FORMULA 10/100Mbit/sec autosensing switch.

While admitting that Allied has been somewhat late into the market with these products, Wray believes this has given the company time to understand what its users really want. "We have the advantage of being able to add in all the features they need, and make it as flexible as possible. We can actually bring out products which are a far better fit."

Wray also feels the products will be far more attractive in the SME marketplace, where robust and well-trusted products are more desirable. "They want tried and tested, good value, fully functional type technology. That's where Allied plays."

By offering an end-to-end solution Wray believes Allied will now come into greater competition with higher level players, such as Cisco Systems. "It's a hard battle for us, because we've never really fought in the top ground," he said. "We've always been picking up business beneath the top of the pyramid, and we've done very well in it."
