Users can upgrade their old 486 PCs to near-Pentium performance for less than $200. Hypertec's HyperRace is a 50 x 50mm plug-in board that contains a 133MHz AMD 586 processor with 16k of internal cache. Hypertec says it fits on most 486 SX, DX and DX2 PCs with clock speeds from 25MHz up, giving performance improvements up to 350 per cent. The product has an RRP of $192 and potential purchasers can request a no-obligation 30-day trial from resellers. Needless to say, Hypertec also suggests purchasers increase their RAM to at least 16Mb. Further upgrade products will be released later this year, including a Pentium to MMX-class product.
