Compaq to break $2000 barrier?

Speculation that Compaq will be releasing a sub-$2000 PC will be put to rest at the end of July when it announces locally a new range of PCs already released in the US.

On June 30 Compaq US officials announced the release of two new ranges of Compaq Presarios, the 2200 series and 4500 series, at price points starting below $US1000. Officials at Compaq in Australia could not confirm whether a similarly aggressive pricing strategy will be adopted in Australia.

Compaq spokesperson Anne Eckert did say "it would be fair enough to work out that it's reasonable that we would be adopting a similar strategy in Australia".

In a press release on Compaq's US Web site, group general manager of Compaq Consumer Group Mike Heil said: "Globally, this line-up continues our quest for market share growth by delivering products at a low total delivered cost."
