Progress acquires Java tool

Progress Software has acquired US-company Apptivity Corporation, 45 days after the launch of Apptivity's Java development tool.

A combination of cash and stocks totalling $US13 million secured the agreement, which will see the 12-month old company absorbed into Progress Software as a product unit.

Kathryn Hartman, Progress Software's Asia-Pacific marketing manager, said Apptivity's tool is the first Java development environment available on the marketplace. The tool can be used for the creation of thin-client, multi-tier business applications. "Progress saw that Java is definitely a strategic direction for the industry as a whole; the Apptivity tool is leading edge technology and it gave us a really great leapfrog into the Java development environment," Hartman said.

Progress Software will be incorporating Java technologies into its core product line. "You'll see a convergence of the development environment as the Internet becomes more and more strategic with development platforms," she said.

"Locally we are thrilled; it really opens up a whole new marketplace for us - we think we'll be able to explore new channels and reach all of those Java developers that we couldn't satisfy before," Hartman said.

Software developers can download a 30-day trial of the Apptivity Java development tool from or
