Ulead Systems has launched the fifth generation of its non-linear desktop video editing software, MediaStudio Pro - proclaiming it to be the first of its type to support MMX.
MediaStudio Pro 5.0 (RRP $725), differs from previous versions of the product in that it has been re-engineered as a dedicated video editing package, said Richard Higgs, marketing manager for Lako Vision, Ulead's Australian distributor.
With the new version of MediaStudio, Ulead decided to reposition the product in the marketplace, Higgs explained. "The previous versions were more a multimedia tool - it was many things to a lot of people with an emphasis on digital video.
"So Ulead took out a lot of the multimedia features that the product didn't need and made it a dedicated video production tool."
Version 5.0 features five modules: Video Paint, CG Infinity, Video Capture, Video Editor, and Audio Editor - everything its competitors offer but more, says Higgs. CG Infinity, Video Paint and MMX support are all new to MediaStudio, and are not found in competing products, he said. MediaStudio Pro also includes Internet streaming codings, making it a simple process to put video on the Web.
The program is available for NT 4.0 or Windows 95 and requires a video capture/playback board, most of which is often bundled with either MediaStudio or its main competitor, Adobe Premier. Higgs said most video capture board customers will be able to buy MediaStudio Pro at an upgrade price of $350 from any previous version of MediaStudio Pro, or at a cross-grade price of $460 for users of Adobe Premier.
Upgrades have been the majority of sales for the MediaStudio products over the past four years, said Higgs, estimating that only 25 per cent of sales have been full versions.
Also, take note that the program is open architecture software, so that many of the plug-ins available for Adobe Premier can be used with MediaStudio Pro.
