It's a tangled web of who bought who, who sold who, and who sells for who, but Online-DELTEC, formerly known as Online Control, has moved from being a distributor to a vendor of UPS systems.
Online Control had been a dual distribution operation. Seventy per cent of its business was in supplying the electrical industry, while the remainder served the UPS market, distributing DELTEC UPS systems to the IT channel.
Early in 1996, Online Control was bought by Schnider, the supplier for its electrical business. The UPS division within Online Control was sold off in September last year to DELTEC. In another twist to the story, DELTEC was then bought by Exide Electronics.
A name change and a new channel brings us to today's Online-DELTEC, a subsidiary of Exide Electronics, and the vendor of both Exide Elec-tronics' PowerWare and Deltec's UPS products.
Although no manufacturing will be done in Australia (it's all done in Helsinki, San Diego and North Carolina), Online-DELTEC is now a manufacturer and covers the markets in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific.
Three distributors have been appointed to the Online-DELTEC channel: Edge, Synnex and Q*Soft who will distribute the small-end UPS systems which start at $225 RRP.
Neil Ewen, general manager of Online- DELTEC, estimates the UPS market in the Asia-Pacific region to be $100 million a year.
