In conjunction with the release of its datawarehousing tool Datastage 2.0 for Windows NT, VMARK has announced an initiative aimed at software developers to help them take data warehousing to a broader market.
The "Vertical Warehouse Initiative", which began a month ago, sees VMARK partnering with vertical market resellers that integrate the DataStage data warehouse modules into their business applications.
"We believe that there is a real opportunity for vertical application developers to take on the issues of data warehousing and to make it a strategic component of their business applications," said Gari Johnson, marketing manager for VMARK.
"The Vertical Warehouse Initiative is a more efficient way to deliver data warehouse solutions so companies can immediately begin to derive the benefits of improved decision making," he said.
DataStage's suite of tools cover the extraction, transformation and shipping of data from one format to another for business intelligence purposes.
Johnson said the new version of DataStage offers a simplified and automated data warehousing process to users. "Because it's a GUI product it's so easy, they don't have to become data warehousing experts to use this tool. This is just like using any other developers' tool and it's drag and drop."
VMARK has been working on reducing the price of data warehousing in an effort to make it more accessible to small and medium enterprises. Data warehousing, Johnson said, was previously an expensive proposition limited to the Fortune 500 companies.
The Vertical Warehouse Initiative will overcome this, firstly by providing developers with data warehousing software components that can be customised and reused for each new customer, and secondly by reducing the cost for developers. The DataStage 2.0 developers kit costs $9500.
"They can now issue out that kind of module at a much less expensive price and it allows them to spend the effort developing it the first time and simply roll it out to each new customer," Johnson said.
The RRP and run time licence for DataStage is $39,500. The next version of DataStage to be released will support Unix.
