‘The sun never sets on Symantec'

Symantec has expanded its antivirus operations within the Asia-Pacific region, with a new base in Sydney designed to provide its users with prompt verification and elimination of computer virus threats.

The Symantec AntiVirus Research Centre (SARC), to be supervised by regional director David Banes, has been established to offer resellers and end users around-the-clock virus support, in particular to combat the escalating number of macro viruses being reported.

The number of macros reported since the first virus detection in May 1996 is 1200. SARC projects that this figure will grow to more than 15,000 by the end of this year - making the macro the fastest growing virus in virus history. The centre will field day-to-day virus reports submitted by users. It will work with the user to define and expel the offending virus within a 24-hour time period.

Additionally, Banes and his team will conduct research into how viruses are being developed in the region.

With research and support centres in Leiden, Tokyo, Santa Monica and now Sydney, Symantec operates on a "24-hour call rotation" system, according to Banes. Users can ring up from anywhere in the world, at any time, about a virus threat, and will be put through to a technician in an "active" time zone.

The move further reflects Symantec's commitment to the reseller community, according to a Symantec spokesperson, who added that resellers can now refer any end users' infection problems directly to the centre.

Users can also submit their newly detected viruses to SARC via its Web site at www.symantec.com/avcenter/submit.html. Users can also download LiveUpdates from this site.
