OMNIS Software has released what it claims to be the first suite of crossware development tools on the market which support both Java and ActiveX components.
The core product, OMNIS Studio ($2299 RRP), provides a component design and Web integration system in a graphic interface with drag and drop functionality.
Objects of various component types such as Java, ActiveX, C++ and OCX can be integrated in OMNIS Studio - everything but boiled eggs can be thrown in, said OMNIS vice president of marketing, Pat McEntee.
He said OMNIS Studio ends the component war which is brewing between ActiveX and Java.
"The truth of the matter is there are two different object worlds that are incompatible and it's not good for the reseller because it makes a lot more work if they have to build everything twice," McEntee said.
"One of things we're trying to get at with the release of Studio is to decrease the cost of software development. To create the real re-use of objects and components, and to allow those underlying attributes of database and platform reliability to be available to all applications."
End of a generation
The event of component engineering and the Web - making ready-made components cheaper to use than developers building it themselves - has signalled the end of the first generation object-oriented programming tools, he said.
"Developers are not thinking about making everything on their own. They're thinking about cruising to www.activex.com because development cycles and the amount of money that can be spent on software is shrinking," he said.
McEntee was in Sydney recently as part of a 90-day tour promoting the new products and launching OMNIS Software as a company - which until May had been known as Blyth Software.
The company has brought on new executive management, a new marketing plan and changes in pricing which McEntee said had been "druidic pricing practices part of an ancient dark age".
"Since the beginning of this year we have consistently clarified our pricing so that somebody other than ourselves can understand it and we have also globalised the pricing so that we have global prices that aren't discountable over the Internet," he said.
