WA hard disk loaders targeted in new anti-piracy campaign

Microsoft has launched an anti-piracy campaign in Western Australia, offering informants a $2500 reward for information regarding hard disk loaders who infringe copyright laws.

Alex Mercer, public relations manager for Microsoft's Law and Corporate Affairs division, said the program was launched in response to calls from Microsoft dealers and the Microsoft WA subsidiary, to stamp out the illegal activity.

Unscrupulous hard disk loaders install software on the computer for the customer but do not give the customer the original disk, the manuals, and licence agreements, leaving the customer without a leg to stand on when service and support is required.

Microsoft will be advertising the program to end users and will send its dealers direct mailers.
