SYDNEY - Digital has sold its printer division to Genicom, saying its strategy is to consolidate its core competencies of servers, NT development and Internet software and services.
The deal will see Genicom covering the manufacture, sales, service and support of Digital badged printers. Digital's printer division staff will join Genicom to work in a team dedicated to Digital printers.
Rationalisation of product overlap will not happen in the foreseeable future as the Genicom and Digital printer distribution channels will remain distinctly separate.
"The sale is almost like insourcing. Digital has found an exclusive provider of Digital badged printers," said Richard Watson, now Genicom's Asia-Pacific business manager.
"Genicom being a dedicated printer manufacturer and provider of services and networking support as well means they can provide that kind of focused support that Digital just can't do itself," he said.
The printer division was first placed on the market 12 months ago at which time Genicom expressed interest.
"It has been a long time in the planning," Watson said, "Digital wanted to make sure everything was going to happen as it should and that the customers were going to be serviced appropriately."
