CCA Pacific - outpricing competitors

Local company CCA Pacific says it has a low-cost alternative to the rack mount servers currently on offer from Compaq and other high-end vendors.

CCA sales and marketing manager Ian Fredrickson said his company saw an opening for a server that could easily be removed from the rack, and so designed a chassis mounted on ball bearings that slides out easily.

Frederickson said CCA is selling mainly into VARs, at prices 20 to 30 per cent cheaper than brand name systems.

"They see Compaq, DEC and HP as a little expensive and too hard to talk to," said Frederickson. "We will basically build a system to their orders, and supply. And we even build up complete rack units with everything in it, including UPS." Fredrickson said the CCA servers do trade off some features, such as temperature control, but doesn't see this as a major drawback. "Now that Intel motherboards have got temperature on their CPUs and so forth we don't see that as a really big issue," Fredrickson said.

"We've got two 80mm fans sucking in air at the front, we've got a 60mm fan at the rear blowing out, plus you've got the power supply sucking air out."

A Pentium II CCA server running at 266MHz carries a price tag of around $4000 (ex tax).

"We do have some standard prices," said Frederickson, "but never ever do people order standard product. It's all build-to-order."

The servers are based on Intel motherboards, and carry a three-year warranty.
