Ascend Communications' recent decision to outsource its warehousing, inventory and warranty management in Australia to CLS has thrown a spotlight on the logistics specialist.
Ascend is a California-based communications specialist with products ranging from individual access adapters to large backbone switching systems such as those used by Telstra's Big Pond service.
Rick Sample, regional support manager of Ascend Communications, said CLS would play a critical role as the company expanded in the region beyond its local base in Melbourne.
Like Ascend Communications, CLS - also Melbourne-based - has been growing at the same rate as its newest customer - about 50 per cent each year.
The company has inventory management and warranty support systems that are being used by some of the leading IT companies in the business.
Its customers include major vendors such as Sun Microsystems Australia, Silicon Graphics and Hewlett-Packard. For many of its customers, CLS acts as the service arm in a fashion that is transparent to the end user.
In some cases CLS even includes answering service calls from the customer for managing repairs and parts replacement.
"We can also work as a virtual network distribution service for startup companies," said Rod Wallace, a director of CLS.
As well as warehousing facilities in Melbourne, CLS has warehouses in all other capitals, Newcastle, Wollongong, Darwin and Townsville.
With more than 100 staff, CLS recently joined the Federal Government's Fixed Term Arrangement - committing to IT industry development by the company valued at $33 million over the next four years.
Those developments will include the establishment in Australia of a technical assistance centre for the Asia-Pacific region.
