Sony is giving its Australian operations a wider focus on its IT business, moving beyond its traditional monitors and storage products to include PCs, such as the Vaio which has been popular in the US.
The line will be aimed more at the advanced home and SOHO market. As such, Sony sees the home PC becoming a core unit in a mix of other Sony products including TVs, VCRs and other home entertainment products.
Joe Cartwright has been promoted to gen-eral manager of the reorganised computer products division in Australia - now the information technology products division.
"Sony has a lot of core technologies in these areas," said Cartwright. "There is an increasing level of convergence between digital and analog products that we will be at the centre of."
Cartwright said the majority of the IT products division would continue to go through distributors.
These tier one distributors account for about 65 per cent of Sony's computer products and the balance roughly divided between specialist resellers and large OEMs.
Sony Australia's managing director, Haruyuki Machida, said that IT is a key element in the company's future business development. "This announcement is the first step towards building upon our opportunities in the Australian market," said Machida.
