Local networking distributor AC&P technology has released ExtendNet VPN, a new virtual private network (VPN) server that secures connection for remote users to access their office LAN via any Internet dial-up line.
Rather than installing remote access servers and modems, companies with a permanent Internet presence can provide secure access for their remote workers from any dial-in access point to any ISP worldwide. This allows companies to outsource the provision of dial-in facilities to their ISP, many of which offer low cost flat rates of around $10 per month.
An added advantage to using the Internet to access your office LAN is that, when travelling, you only need to find a local ISP that will let you dial in. The benefits of a VPN over standard Internet access are that you can use everything on your office LAN remotely. ExtendNet VPN provides a secure communication tunnel to the company LAN via point-to-point-tunneling protocol (PPTP) and performance is boosted by using Microsoft's Point-to-point compression.
