Iomega is expanding its distribution in New Zealand, with Tech Pacific and Electronic Resources joining Datamatic as agents for its full range.
Newly-appointed Australasian manager Peter Dawson wanted to keep the appointments under wraps until January, however he recently confirmed the details. He says the change has come about partly through regional commitments to Tech Pacific and Electronic Resources, and partly through the need to move beyond exclusive distribution.
"Datamatic has done a fan- tastic job and built our brand and we're very grateful, but the march of progress is inevitable. Our ultimate policy is not built around exclusive distribution," he said.
Datamatic's managing director, Marcelo Pragier, says his company is happy to compete with Tech Pacific and Electronic Resources.
"We lose market share but we have plenty of products and good channel relationships. We will still retain a big part of the market," he said.
Pragier says Datamatic has another ace up its sleeve with Nomai cartridges. Designed to be compatible with Zip drives, Nomai will be distributed in New Zealand exclusively by Datamatic when legal issues have been sorted out.
"We have samples and expect quantity in January," Pragier said.
Further plans for Iomega include an office in New Zealand by mid-1998 with a channel salesperson, a major accounts staffer and a technical support person.
