Compaq has opened a new marketing channel with the appointment of TM Direct as a dealer that will operate through telemarketing.
TM Direct will have a dedicated team of telephone salespeople who are also computer literate. They will sell Compaq's notebooks, desktop systems and options such as memory.
"TM Direct will be treated by Compaq like any other reseller," said Ian Penman, managing director of Compaq Australia. "The appointment will allow Compaq to tackle the market between the retail channel and corporate users.
"People contacting Compaq for product details will be asked if they want to deal with the nearest authorised reseller or TM Direct," Penman said.
In the US, Compaq last week announced the first desktop systems sold through the company's new build-to-order distribution method, in a direct attack on Dell Computer.
The release of its latest Deskpro 2000 and 4000 Pentium MMX systems and increased mem-ory sees the company eliminating layers from its distribution model, pricing systems below similarly configured PCs from Dell, according to sources.
