Well, not quite yet. However, Compaq servers will soon be available from a new army of small business-focused resellers who previously didn't have access to the best-known name in server-land.
Compaq Specialised Associates is the new name for resellers who join Compaq's push into the SME market place. In return for signing up, resellers will get sales training on the Prosignia range of servers and some Proliant servers that were previously only available to accredited resellers, who had in-house engineers with Compaq and Microsoft or Novell certification.
"Small business people really have the same need for non-stop reliable servers as the large corporates", said Terry Steer, product manager with Compaq.
"We've lowered the entry price and raised the availability of the Proliant 1600, specifically so that small businesses can acquire technology that will stay running and grow with their needs." The Proliant 1600 is a dual processor capable machine that can accommodate 512MB of RAM and five hot-swap disk drive bays. The entry point is $6750, for a single processor Pentium II running at 266MHz, with 64MB RAM.
The Prosignia 200 sells for $2995 and comes with a 233MHz PII and 32MB RAM. Despite the new low entry prices, all servers still come with Compaq's smartstart software that makes loading Windows NT, NetWare or Unixware a painless process, requiring only a few questions to be answered on screen.
