Local Toshiba officials are playing down concerns about a backlog of inventory in the channel, claiming an average stock turnaround of about two weeks in Australia. Laurie White, Toshiba's national product manager, says suggestions that the US subsidiary was struggling with inventory were also exaggerated.
"We have had more inventory than we would like, but compared to the rest of the industry we're doing well," White claims.
And White said reports that Toshiba will move to a worldwide build-to-order (BTO) model for its products in April are also inaccurate. "The bigger scenario is to provide some screens according to customer needs later this year, but April is wrong. Our spokesperson was misquoted about that timeframe," he said.
However, White did admit that Toshiba might adopt "certain elements" of a BTO model in Australia.
"It's not here at the moment, but it is something we're considering," White said.
