Customer service proves a winner for ‘Baby Bill'

Any business that tags along on the shirttails of Microsoft is bound to be successful. Referred to as "Baby Bills", these organisations, such as help desk player Onyx Software, are forging ahead in leaps and bounds by creating products that only support Microsoft.

Seattle-based Onyx is chasing clients for its core product Onyx Customer Centre and associated Web Wizards software.

Developed exclusively for Microsoft NT and SQL Servers, Customer Centre provides marketing, sales, service and support teams with a single view into all customer information. Onyx claims that with Customer Centre, all employees use the same application to manage customer interaction, including those that cross departments.

In a rapidly growing industry, forecast to have a multibillion dollar market in the near future, Belinda York, Onyx's Australian managing director, is unashamed to mention Microsoft in the same sentence as her company.

"Onyx Software actually had its beginnings inside Microsoft, so we've always worked very closely with them," she said.

"It's an important part of our marketing strategy for Customer Centre that it carries the ÔDesigned for Microsoft Back Office logo'."
