Revenue for the worldwide thin appliance server market reached $US1.5 billion, a 52 per cent increase from 1997, according to Dataquest research.
Dataquest defines a thin server as specialised, network-based hardware that performs a single or specialised set of functions.
Device-control thin servers, the most mature market, which includes mostly print servers, grew 13.6 per cent, Dataquest said. Revenue for the workgroup intranet appliance group rose more than 200 per cent, according to the report.
Large businesses implemented the most thin servers (35.6 per cent), followed by medium-size businesses with less than 1000 employees (28.9 per cent) and small businesses (16.5 per cent), Dataquest said.
