Hewlett-Packard yesterday released a new server for small and medium-size businesses that comes with a Web-based management system previously available only with high-end systems.
The HP NetServer E50 includes 300MHz and 333MHz Pentium II processors, an ultra-wide SCSI controller and 7200-revolution-per-minute drives.
Besides the Web-based management system, called TopTools, the server comes bundled with backup software for Windows NT and NetWare.
The backup software is designed for people who are not IT experts, and includes a graphical user interface and a built-in scheduler that backs up the unattended server periodically, according to a statement from HP. The software also uses object replication technology for fast image backup.
A tape alert function will send end users messages when it is time for routine maintenance such as retiring a tape cartridge.
Starting next month, HP will begin programs that will allow resellers to lease HP server systems for a monthly payment.
