Tech Pac to move house

Tech Pacific says it's the most significant project it has undertaken in its 17 year history. ARN took a sneak peek last week and we can see why. Currently under construction in the Sydney suburb of Matraville is Tech Pac's new distribution centre.

When completed in the third quarter it will be the size of four football pitches, with 24,000sqm of warehouse plus 4000sqm of office space.

According to Tech Pac officials, the project is ahead of schedule and stock will start flowing in from the beginning of July.

The distributor decided to build the centre after it commissioned a supply chain review. The report concluded that the existing distribution centre could not sustain projected growth and relocation was required.

The new centre has been designed to embody three separate stages using internal demountable walls to separate them. Tech Pac will occupy stage one immediately, while stages two and three will be temporarily sub-let, enabling the facility to support exponential growth of the company for the next 10 years.

Stage one will encompass 15,000sqm of floor space, accommodating 19 docks with a combination of single doors, double doors, level docks and recessed docks. According to Claude Carnevale, Tech Pac's transport and service manager, the key feature of the centre is its flexible design.

"The operational benefits are huge," he said. "It will operate 15 hours a day initially, but has the ability to go to 24 hours if required.

"Stage one is set up to handle 10,000 orders per day, can hold 9000 pallets and 8000 pick locations at full capacity."

To operate the new facility, Tech Pac has invested in new material handling systems and a new centre management computer system. This includes extensive use of RF (radio frequency) technology, late entry/early exit order processing, separate full case picking conveyor system and 18 despatch lanes for pre-sorting.
