3Com is to acquire US Robotics within the next three months in a deal currently valued at $US6.6 billion.
US Robotics will be assimilated into 3Com to trade under the 3Com name. The expanded company will employ more than 12,000 people in 130 countries tallying combined annual revenues of more than $US5 billion as a result.
"The two companies have very similar visions to dominate and play very strongly in connecting remote users together from basically the desktop all the way through to WAN," Andy Hurt, 3Com Australia's marketing manager, said.
He said the infrastructure synergies of the two companies means it is unlikely there will be significant staffing changes.
