Warehousing -- the latest trend

Following general practice in the US, warehousing has become a trend among Australian distributors. And it's a trend that can only benefit the resellers.

Tech Pacific is currently constructing a 24,000sqm distribution centre in Sydney's Matraville. And international reseller GE Capital Information Technology Systems (GECITS) which built a similar facility a year ago, was recently named the IBM Reseller of the Year for 1997.

GECITS' CEO, Ron Leeder, said in North America it is a requirement to stock inventory as a reseller.

"Australia is the one country where you don't have to carry inventory as a reseller," he said.

Leeder says, as a reseller there are distinct advantages in holding large amounts of stock. He said it gives greater scope for customising as well as lowering the turnaround time for products.

The GECITS facility employs an advanced barcode system and radio frequency handheld devices to allow staff to monitor orders as they move through the warehouse and configuration area.

The 3000sqm distribution is four times larger than GECITS' old warehouse. Staff can configure 200 systems per day, compared to 90 in the previous facility. GECITS stocks products from the big vendors including IBM, Compaq, Digital, HP, Microsoft and Toshiba.
