Avnet buys British distributor

Distributor Hall-Mark Computer Products now has a sister company in the United Kingdom. Hall-Mark's corporate parent, Avnet Computer Marketing Group (CMG), has acquired Bytech Systems, the leading distributor of IBM mid-range systems in Britain.

Bytech, which will now operate as Avnet Bytech, reported 1997 sales of more than $US55 million with such products as the IBM RS/6000, Netfinity servers, storage, middleware, Intel processors and Unisys products.

"Our global customers are really asking us to support them, and our major suppliers - IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Digital - are pushing us to expand," said Rich Ward, president of Avnet CMG. "It really serves a customer need as well as a supplier need."

The purchase of Bytech advances Avnet CMG's and Hall-Mark's strategy of establishing a tech-nical-distribution infrastructure throughout the European continent.

Last October, Hall-Mark began operating in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where the company sells HP, Digital and IBM products. Hall-Mark and Avnet also recently established an Australian presence (see ARN April 29, page 1) and plans to start distributing and reselling Digital products from July.
