In a class almost of its own, FTP Software is, well, ftp (file transfer protocol software). The US company has been making ftp software for 10 years and has a range of products that are almost alone in the file transfer arena.
Ross Shaw is an account man-ager at systems builder ComNet Solutions, an FTP reseller. He said the FTP Software range is "pretty well unique in the breadth and depth it covers".
ComNet has installed FTP Software to more than 1000 users at Integral Energy and performed a similar size installation at the NSW Department of Land and Water.
Shaw said FTP Software is a simple product range to sell, but "it normally requires a bit of networking knowledge that's tied up with the various protocols it supports".
Shaw said FTP Software support for different platforms was another reason it sold so well.
OnWeb Host is the newest edition to its range and it provides host access from any Java-enabled Web browser. It is installed on a company's Web server so all software deployment, configuration and upgrades are handled centrally.
In Australia for sales training, director of Asia-Pacific sales for FTP Brad Strutner explained to ARN the principle of OnWeb Host.
Users are served host access tools through any Java-enabled Web browser. The FTP sites are mapped onto the Windows Explorer interface, which Strutner says reduces the training required.
While the strength of the product is in larger networks, Strutner said it could be used just as effectively for three or four users.
"With a browser on everyone's desk, it's simple to manage the desktop from a server," Strutner said. This, he says, means there is no need for remote MIS staff.
OnWeb Host v2.0 is a centrally managed approach for native desktop-, server- and browser-based connectivity applications, Strutner said. He said ftp was simple to install and support.
"Software provides higher margins than hardware. There's money to be made from that standpoint," he said.
