NEC plans full-featured $US1000 notebook

NEC may take honours as the first major system manufacturer to offer a $US1000 priced full-featured notebook PC.

Code-named Saturn, the all-in-one system will be unveiled in the third quarter with both a 233MHz Pentium with MMX and a 233MHz Pentium II, according to a source familiar with the launch.

The unit will be offered with both a thin-film transistor (TFT) and double-layer supertwist nematic (DSTN) display and a 2MB to 3MB hard drive. At its introduction, the DSTN system will be priced "at well under $US1500, and the TFT version in the mid-teens," the source said.
