Barrett's billion connected computers

Intel's newly-elected president and chief operating officer, Craig Barrett, was filled with Intel-speak on the approaching world of "one billion connected computers" when he hit Sydney last week.

Barrett demonstrated business scenarios, including a fruit and vegetable vendor as well as a bicycle manufacturer, where the use of technology provided practical productivity gains.

He said Intel's role is to facilitate the benefits of high-performance com- puting to companies by easier access to the Web, streamlined processing, and record keeping.

"Investment in IT is not a luxury, it is a necessity," Barrett said.
