L&H launches audio development tool for Net

Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products recen-tly released Audio Cafe, a tool that allows developers using Microsoft's FrontPage to include audio content in a Web site, L&H said.

The audio is delivered to users in the form of a Java applet, using standard Internet protocols. This means users with any Web browser that supports Java JIT (just-in-time) compilation can access sound and speech over the Internet without having to download a plug-in or reconfigure their browsers, L&H said in a statement.

Because the program doesn't require users to download any plug-ins it will encourage developers to build more audio content into their Web sites, transforming the Web from a primarily visual medium to one that includes true multimedia content, said L&H.
