The printer market is not immune to the financial crisis in the Asia-Pacific, according to Dataquest, which has reported a fall in the overall number of printer shipments for the second quarter of this year. Shipments in Australia were down by 6 per cent.
Printer shipments in Asia-Pacific as a whole fell to 1.6 million units, a decline of 8.7 per cent compared to the same period in 1997, the company said.
On the bright side, printer shipments in China -- the largest market for printers in the Asia-Pacific -- soared 77 per cent in the second quarter of this year over the same period in 1997, while shipments in India rose 33 per cent.
According to Dataquest, the ink-jet printer market in China grew 150 per cent, accounting for 41 per cent of the country's total printer market.
Dividing up Asia-Pacific's printer market, China has the largest piece of the pie with a 33 per cent share, followed by Australia (17 per cent), South Korea (12 per cent), Taiwan (10 per cent) and India (somewhat more than 6 per cent), according to Dataquest.
