With a view to beefing up presence for the McAfee brand at the grass roots level, Network Associates announced last week that major education sector distributor, Scholastic Australia had been added to its distribution network.
Richard Treloggen, retail channel manager, Network Associates said the addition of Scholastic New Media to the distribution network was a significant move for the company in what is a rapidly growing market.
"We haven't been all that successful in selling into educational markets, but our products have great relevance there" he said. "Our current distributors, Marketing Results and Tech Pacific have been selling educational product without great success as this is a completely different channel of distribution for them."
Treloggen said many organisations - such as university co-op bookshops and student direct mail sellers - are starting to add all sorts of software to their ranges and appear to prefer sourcing through their traditional educational supply lines.
"We are hitting a completely different market which covers educational institutions from primary to tertiary. This gives us a great opportunity to put the McAfee brand onto more desktops and get users familiar with our products at the earliest possible age."
Wayne Cooper, national manager of Scholastic New Media, told ARN it had been distributing computer software for 15 years. He said that Network Associates' range and other software products are a natural extension of its core competencies.
"As all educational institutions are communicating more and more over the Internet, they are increasingly aware of the security issues. This makes the utilities, antivirus protection and encryption products, such as is offered by Networks Associates, important and in-demand tools. We think there is tremendous opportunity for these products," he said.
"As one of the major distributors in the educational area, we are constantly trying to find solutions for schools and universities. Software developers are now finding they need specialist distributors to maximise their revenues from what are very specialist education markets," said Cooper.
"The fact we have been around so long means our customers know us and are very happy dealing with us. They were asking us to add these sorts of products to our catalogues.
Cooper said pricing assistance from Network Associates would allow some students and schools to save up to 40 per cent off McAfee products to what they would pay through retail outlets.
