Canon Australia's office imaging products operation has moved from a channel structure to a direct selling model in Tasmania following the purchase of its Hobart reseller, Ian Rumney Office Equipment.
Canon currently operates a direct selling sales force of over 160 in the five major state capitals and a reseller channel in most other regional centres. The Hobart store, at 294 Elizabeth Street in the city, will bring to six the number of stores it now owns in major regional centres.
Peter Bragg, national sales manager, Canon office imaging products operation, told ARN last week that all nine staff had been retained and that Penelope Patten, a local with extensive office equipment sales experience, had been appointed to manage the operation.
He said that Ian Rumney had been selling Canon office equipment very successfully in Hobart for 20 years and that he had put the business up for sale to go into semi-retirement. Canon's office imaging division had taken over the existing lease on the premises and will be refurbishing and improving the building in the near future. He denied this signals a buying up of dealers across the country by Canon.
"We have a lot of confidence in the Tasmanian market and the Hobart store is a strategically important dealership for us," said Rumney.
"We have a lot of customers with nation-wide operations and being able to offer sales support and service in Tasmania is important to those organisations.
