Handheld devices readied for corporate data access

Software vendors and developers will give 3Com Corporation's PalmPilot platform a major enterprise boost with applications and toolkits that will optimise the handheld device for access to corporate data.

In the next few weeks, Multiactive Software is expected to announce the release of Maximizer Enterprise 5.0, an out-of-the-box sales-tracking automation package that will include synchronisation for the PalmPilot and Windows CE platforms. The software will offer an optional toolkit to give developers access to ODBC-compliant databases.

UltraLite deployment

Sybase and 3Com, in the meantime, have announced plans to work together on integrating Sybase's UltraLite deployment of its Adaptive Server Anywhere relational database with 3Com's Palm Computing operating system. The duo will market their development efforts later this year.

A major supplier of remote-access technology, Synchrologic, also announced its contribution to the platform boost by pledging to design and license a version of its SyncKit software to extend client/server applications to the PalmPilot. SyncKit will allow developers to give PalmPilot users direct access to corporate information on any enterprise database server.

The completion of the PalmPilot applications and toolkits is eagerly awaited. Precise dates and pricing have yet to be announced.
