3Com heightens modem assault

3Com has again slashed the prices of its modems and is offering resellers the chance to win a car as it continues its aggressive assault on that market.

By dropping the price of its voice/fax modem from $299 to $249 and backing it up with an aggressive advertising campaign, 3Com is again hoping to double its shipments for the next quarter.

"We will be the cheapest of the branded products on the market," said local managing director Gerhard Rumpff.

3Com doubled its shipments last quarter and now commands around 8 per cent of the modem market, he claimed.

"We hope to move to 10 or 11 per cent of the market by the end of this quarter," Rumpff said.

Capturing the hearts and minds of resellers is central to 3Com's strategy and it is has launched an incentive program for resellers which will see it give away seven Toyotas over the next seven weeks.

"It's critical that the channel is more aware of us," Rumpff said.

Admitting to some supply problems earlier in the year, 3Com has expanded its distribution chain with the recent addition of CHA, and Rumpff is confident the company is now over those problems.

Like Sirius (ARN, October 7, p22), 3Com expects the ratification of the V.90 standard, which allows users to transmit data at 56Kbps, will spur the market.

"There are 1.1 million modems operating at the slower speeds. That's a big upgrade opportunity," Rumpff said.

Meanwhile, 3Com's Small to Medium Enterprise packaged networking program is up and running and has been refined to iron out some of the early glitches.
