Macromedia consolidates tool offerings

With its corporate focus now on Web publishing and distance learning, graphics tool vendor Macromedia is restructuring its product lines in Australia.

"We have so many tools that people get confused so we are consolidating our offerings to the market here," said Macromedia Asia-Pacific director, Sein Chew.

Its wide-ranging product set will be consoli-dated into three or four boxed products, each holding a number of components that were previously sold as independent units.

Macromedia Director and Studio, for example, will be brought together as Director Multimedia Studio.

The anchor product will be Director but bundled in will be Studio and its components. The cost of the total package will be "just a few dollars on top of a very attractive price point for Director", Chew said.

In Web publishing, Macromedia is bundling Dreamweaver with Fireworks and Flash under the title Dreamweaver Internet Studio.

It is being touted by Macromedia as the most complete set of tools on the market for professional Web publishers.

The second potentially high-growth market in Macromedia's sights is the corporate learning sector and its need for tools that create, deliver and manage training content on intranets, the Internet or CD-ROMs.

Its new contender in that arena is the Attain Enterprise Learning System now being launched in Australia.

Under the Attain umbrella, Macromedia offers the Pathware management application, Dream-weaver Attain and Flash for developing Web content plus Authorware and Director for computer-based training solutions.

"We are shifting from providing tools for computer-based training to a complete learning system taking in authoring and delivery tools plus administration and reporting."

Chew said Macromedia plans to retain its two Australian distributors, Firmware Design and Scholastic New Media, and will be working especially closely with Firmware Design in the corporate learning area.
