Desktop Y2K tools hit the channel

A product designed to resolve year 2000 problems on desktop PCs and client/server applications is already generating significant interest in the channel, with a number of high-profile channel partners signing up to distribute it.

Viasoft's OnMark 2000 suite comprises a range of tools designed to survey, evaluate, repair and test desktop PCs for Y2K compliance (ARN July 15, 1998).

Viasoft has traditionally operated under a direct sales model, but the company's local managing director Martyn Bartlett said the release of OnMark 2000 required a different approach.

"Since this is a commodity product, we've adopted a multitier distribution strategy with our direct sales force complementing and supporting the efforts of our new master distributors and integration partners."

Channel partners

Viasoft channel partners include 10 "Viasoft integration partners" (VIPs) and a "value added distributor". The OnMark 2000 VIPs include Aspect Computing, Harris Technology, Equant Systems Solutions, Millennium Solutions, Diamond River, Q-Data, Megatech and BSR (Business Services & Resources).

Harris Technology's managing director Ron Harris said: "OnMark 2000 is the best solution we've found for the desktop Y2K problem. We spent months reviewing all the tools on the market and found nothing as comprehensive or elegant as the Viasoft product."

Harris is expecting demand for OnMark 2000 to increase significantly during the course of 1999 as people become aware of the ramifications of the problem.

MUA has also been contracted as a value-added distributor for OnMark 2000, providing not only products but also specialist expertise and training for resellers operating in the small-to-medium enterprise market.

Paul McQuarrie, MUA managing director, said that the SME market offers a great opportunity for the OnMark 2000 channel, with most companies in that space still unaware of the full implications of the millennium bug.

"We've been asked by many of our resellers to provide year 2000 services for both the server and desktop platforms and we're using the Viasoft product to provide that comprehensive coverage of PC hardware and software," he added.
