Job opportunities in Australia's information technology sector are set to increase by 4.2 per cent over the next three months, according to the latest forecast from recruitment specialists Drake International.
According to Drake executives, most of the recruitment activity is set to emanate from Victoria and Western Australia and be based on the areas of millennium conversion, intranet and Internet development and electronic commerce installation.
Around 42 per cent of organisations surveyed are looking to take on new staff.
"In the next quarter, the outsourcing of the Australian Taxation Office [information systems infrastructure] - expected to be worth $400 million over the next three years - is set to create some 200 positions in the ACT and up to 300 in Victoria," the executives claimed.
"In addition to these, a plethora of opportunities will also become available to other players in the industry, given that the successful outsourcing provider is expected to subcontract more specialist activities.
"The windfall is also expected to generate a significant demand for information technology specialists - in particular systems analysts, programmers, business analysts, systems engineers and application and software developers.
