Swann diving deeper into modem market

After launching in July of this year, Swann Communications has now managed to get its SwannSmart and MacSurfer modems onto the shelves of Harvey Norman and Clive Peeters Electrical stores as well as many smaller dealers.

Melbourne-based Swann - also known as Modem Wholesale - is distributing the external 56Kbps V.90 modems in Australia for Taiwanese manufacturer Lectron, an ISO 9001 company which also supplies Acer.

National sales manager for Swann Communications, Rob Mesaros, said interest from large and small retail outlets was better than expected and that the company is now looking to appoint sub-distributors to cope better with specialty sales in other areas.

One of the most popular aspects of the modem with both consumers and retailers is the WebWorks 98 CD that ships with the box.

Mesaros described the CD as a guide to computers and the Internet for absolute beginners. It covers fundamental minefields and barriers the average novice faces when taking their first tentative steps with the technology.

"A task such as where to plug a modem in may seem rudimentary to those who know," said Mesaros. "But to someone who doesn't, the whole experience can be overwhelming and WebWorks 98 shows them the way."

Swann Communication's SwannSmart and MacSurfer 56Kbps models have recommended retail prices of $199 and $229 respectively.
