Apptivity 3.0 takes business applications to the Web

Worldwide supplier of application development tools Progress Software has announced the release of its new business applications development tool Apptivity 3.0. Officials claim Apptivity 3.0 combines a Java-based application server with a number of integrated features that allow users to establish and maintain applications for e-commerce, intranets, extranets and the Internet. Built using new SmartClient technology, the system should enable businesses to support a variety of client types by offering users a flexible application configuration facility - without needing extra resources for multiple development efforts and tools.

"IT departments today need to keep abreast of rapidly changing business needs and unprecedented demands for access to business-critical information," according to Graham Sowden, Progress Software's sales and marketing manager.

"Apptivity delivers the right combination of productivity and performance to meet these needs, while decreasing time to market, reducing costs and providing new services and capabilities to a broader user community."

The new Web application development tool is being billed as the next stage of Progress' Universal Application Architecture for the integration of information from any data source, allowing information to be accessed from diverse client environments.

According to Progress officials, the system combines scalability and security with several reusable server components created to offer better productivity. It can be deployed to any JDK 1.02, 1.1, or 1.2-compliant platform, including Netscape Navigator 3.x/4.x and Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.x/4.x.

Scheduled to ship at the end of November, Apptivity Application Server is priced at $15,500, with the Apptivity Developer package costing $1550.
