The convergence of digital entertainment technologies continues at pace with Creative Pacific announcing last week the release of its third-generation PC-DVD Encore Dxr2 bundled with a desktop theatre 5.1 Dolby digital speaker system.
According to Creative, this package is the only PC product delivering the full home theatre entertainment experience - including video and digital Dolby sound - without more expensive hi-fi equipment.
"This is the next step in Creative's commitment to the merging of home entertainment functions into the one unit - a PC," said Kamil Gurgen, marketing manager at Creative Pacific.
"This technology can also be used in the living room and shows our commitment to the 7000 or so DVD customers that we already have in Australia. There is now a wealth of people who want to watch video on their PCs. With this package we are giving them the opportunity to do that with high-quality surround-sound and graphics."
With the desktop Theatre 5.1 speakers having an RRP of $999, the PC-DVD Encore 5X carrying an RRP of $699 and the software DVD decoding kit an RRP of $499, PC retailers now have the opportunity to deliver a full home theatre experience at a fraction of the cost of other packages on the market, Creative officials claim.
