NORTH SYDNEY, September 9th, 2004 – In the second quarter of 2004 the Australian Smart Handheld Device (SHD) market posted strong growth of 21.5% from Q1 2004 in unit shipment terms. This significant growth was mainly attributed to the converged space which saw an expansion of 54.3% from the previous quarter, with the bulk of growth seen in the data-centric category. The pen-based handheld space declined by 1.7% compared to Q1 2004, after experiencing minimal growth in the previous quarter.

IDC Associate Analyst, Mercie Clement stated, "The strong growth in the SHD market in Q2 2004 was largely driven by converged devices, specifically data centric). This trend is expected to continue as vendors in the space expand and improve their offerings as well as work more closely with wireless carriers to offer better plans. It is also key that vendors and carriers work together to educate the end-users on the full functionality of the respective devices, especially in small business space."

"From an OS perspective, whilst Microsoft remained the leader, with 43.8% share of the total market, Palm ate into Microsoft's share, growing by 66.9% sequentially. The third position went to Symbian, which grew by 29.6% from the first quarter of 2004," added Ms Clement.
