Think token ring is too complex? Madge Networks claims installing its new Smart DeskStream token ring switch is simply a matter of plug and play.
"A lot of resellers think token ring is very complex and that they don't have the technological clout to do it, so they just put it in the too-hard basket," said Ian Lisle, Madge Network's Australian regional marketing manager, Asia-Pacific.
"This product makes it very simple to sell token ring."
The switch auto-detects and auto-configures itself, making it virtually plug and plug, claimed Simon Jones, Madge's product marketing manager for workgroup switching. Madge also claims that the Smart DeskStream is the lowest cost token ring switch in the industry at around $275 per port, making it a no-brainer choice over token ring hubs.
"The price per port of this switch is comparable to shared hubs," said Jones. "It's about 33 per cent less than the nearest equivalent product."
While performance is the main reason Ethernet customers move to switching, token ring customers will benefit from improved manageability, reliability and security, he said.
