Specialist storage distributor AustStor has released the Cedar CD-R Publisher, bringing the production of short runs of CD-ROMs to within the range of small-to-medium business.
Lachlan MacDonald, managing director of AustStor, said that the publisher is another good example of a specialist device that attaches to a PC but retains margin for the reseller.
The basic unit, designed for a desktop, incorporates a 4x write and 8x read CD-Recorder with a 50 CD autoloader with a colour printer at a recommended retail price of $9858.
MacDonald claims this is significantly lower than any comparable CD production system, and the key thing has been the integrated printing capacity. "Almost any reseller of desktop PCs with an interest in the movable storage area can sell this product," he said. "It will appeal to anyone who has the need for short production runs of CDs."
And some resellers have already seized the market. According to Bruce Smead, managing director of Melbourne imaging specialist system integrator BSH, there is a growing demand from businesses supplying product information on CD as evidenced by the number of bureau services. He referred to boutique software houses as well as corporate customers managing databases that required updates as prime examples of the market.
The Cedar replicators can be configured with two, three or four reader/writers and with multiple disk hoppers.
