Government breaks Telstra monopoly

The Commonwealth Government has announced regulations that will break Telstra's monopoly in providing electronic commerce solutions to government agencies.

In response to a maturing of the e-commerce marketplace The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Richard Alston, has outlined an initiative that grants departments independent powers to select a service provider most suited to the specific criteria many departments present.

Under the previous model, agencies were obligated to utilise Telstra's Transigo solution.

The Government's actions were motivated by a confidence in the burgeoning e-commerce market and a desire to demonstrate an innovative approach to the use of technology.

This attitude and consequent policy will create some lucrative opportunities for IT businesses involved in the provision of e-commerce.
